Green Mission
Let's Make it a Green Festival
Anytime 20,000 people come to enjoy an outdoor festival, they leave with a big smile, but they also leave behind a big mountain of paper, plastic bottles and food containers that often end up in the landfill. The Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival is determined to continue the efforts made in the last couple of years to become the greenest festival in Vermont by substantially reducing the amount of waste generated during the day. Let’s make it happen! Here's how you can help.
Green Goals for 2012
We ask that all festival-goers and teams bring refillable water bottles. There are great stainless steel bottles for sale in stores all around the region. This will reduce the need for petroleum products in making bottles and for transportation.
We will provide free water to festival goers and teams via a water truck thanks to the generous support of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont. This year the spigots will be insulated to keep the water nice and cold.
Check out the Kick The Bottle table next to the truck for educational materials and and the I Kicked the Bottle game.
We encourage all our wonderful food vendors to use sustainable food ware: all cups, containers, serving dishes, utensils and napkins will be biodegradable, recyclable and/or reusable.
There will be 20 RECYCLING containers next to trash bins throughout the festival grounds. Please separate your trash accordingly and help us stay GREEN by recycling
We hope all our teams and spectators will carpool or use alternative and public methods of transportation to and from the festival. Walk, bike, skateboard, car pool, take the bus...pick a method that saves carbon and makes you healthier and happier!
For a small donation we have a Bike Valet service so your bicycle stays safe while you enjoy the festivites.
We're working to reduce the amount of printed material generated and we're using recycled papers for the festival and marketing materials.
Alcohol and Smoke Free Festival
The Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival is an alcohol free and smoke free event. This event is a day for fun, fitness, and fundraising for two cancer survivor non-profits, Dragonheart Vermont and Survivorship Network on Wellness.
